Mars Tiled DSK File for 463M DEM USGS V2 Surface by ESA SPICE Service ================================================================================ This file contains one of 1024 tiles comprising digital shape model of Mars using shape data derived by the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) mission based on MOLA data. It has been created with the utility MKDSK by the ESA SPICE Service on June 30, 2023. Objects ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This file contains DSK data for the MARS surface. NAIF ID code for MARS is 499. DSK Surface name is MARS_463M_DEM_USGS_V2 and the Surface NAIF ID code is 4990000. References ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [1] DSK Required Reading. (*) or any higher version of the same kernels About the DSK generation ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In order to retain the maximum spatial resolution of the source data, a set of tiled DSKs have been produced to provide full coverage of Mars. The planet is separated in 32 by 32 latitudinal and longitudinal divisions, each of them covering 11.25 degrees longitude and 5.625 degrees latitude. The latitudinal sector YY and longitudinal sector XX of the tiled grid is indicated in the DSK filename. mars_mola_dem_463m_YY_XX_v02.bds For example, the tile 01_01 covers latitude range from 84.375 to 90.0 and longitude range -180.0 to -168.75, the tile 01_02 -- covers latitude range from 84.375 to 90.0 and longitude range from -168.75 to -157.5, and the tile 32_32 -- covers latitude range from -90.0 to -84.375 and longitude range from 168.75 to 180.0. The plate model data used to generate this DSK is obtained from the Digital Elevation Model from USGS [4]. In order to make sure there are no gaps at the boundaries between tiles, each segment has been created using ``padding'' including additional plates extending slightly beyond the segments boundaries (consecutive tiles overlap by few rows of plates). This ensures that no ray emanating from the origin and hitting the sphere within the segment's longitude-latitude coverage can miss all of the segment's plates. For more details see Segment Coverage Errors section in [1]. This DSK has been generated using MKDSK [2] by Alfredo Escalante Lopez from the following file: {objfile} from the following dataset: Mars_MGS_MOLA_DEM_mosaic_global_463m.tif The data set description hereafter is taken from [4]: Data Set Overview ================= The DEM represents more than 600 million measurements gathered between 1999 and 2001, adjusted for consistency (Neumann and others, 2001, 2003) and converted to planetary radii. These have been converted to elevations above the areoid as determined from a Martian gravity field solution GMM-2B (Lemoine and others, 2001), truncated to degree and order 50, and oriented according to current standards. The MOLA measurements were converted into a digital elevation model (DEM; G.A. Neumann, written commun., 2002; Neumann and others, 2001; Smith and others 2001) using Generic Mapping Tools software (Wessel and Smith, 1998), with a resolution of 128 pixels per degree. In projection, the pixels are 463 meters in size at the equator.
